What does a literary agent do?

Accepted Answer

An agent represents authors to publishers. That includes editorial guidance before submission, pitching the book to editors, negotiating contracts and rights, and advocating for the author throughout publication and beyond.

Question 2

Do I need a literary agent?

Accepted Answer

If you're aiming for traditional publication with a major or mid-size publisher, an agent is effectively required. Most editors at those houses only consider agented submissions, and an agent secures stronger terms than most authors negotiate alone.

Question 3

How long is the review process?

Accepted Answer

Initial query review takes 6–8 weeks. If a full manuscript is requested, expect another 6–10 weeks. I respond personally to projects under consideration; no response within 10 weeks should be read as a respectful pass.

Question 4

What genres do you represent?

Accepted Answer

Fiction across literary, commercial, historical, thriller, mystery, women's, contemporary, science fiction, fantasy, and young adult. Nonfiction in memoir, biography, history, business, leadership, self-development, current affairs, popular science, culture, and narrative nonfiction.

Question 5

Can self-published authors submit?

Accepted Answer

Yes, with context. Tell me about your previous publication history, sales, and what you're hoping representation will help you do next. I consider new projects or rights to previously self-published work selectively.

Question 6

What should a query letter include?

Accepted Answer

One page covering: a clear hook, a brief synopsis with stakes, genre and word count, two or three recent comparative titles, and a short author bio. Direct, specific, and free of jargon.

Question 7

Do you accept simultaneous submissions?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Please let me know if your project is being considered elsewhere, and let me know promptly if you receive an offer of representation.

Question 8

Do you charge any fees?

Accepted Answer

No. Reputable literary agents earn commission on sales they make on your behalf — typically 15% domestic and 20% on subsidiary or translation rights. Never pay a reading fee.
